Some want 'marriage' out of state laws

SACRAMENTO /*Calif. Secretary of State Debra Bowen*/ says supporters of the measure must gather nearly 700,000 signatures by early August to get it on the ballot.

Its authors say the "no marriage" proposal would replace the word "marriage" with "domestic partnership," and call it a response to Proposition 8, last November's voter approved gay marriage ban. The measure would repeal that ban and define domestic partnerships as unions between all couples, regardless of sexual orientation.

The proposal is the grassroots effort of two heterosexual college students from Southern California. The state supreme court is currently reviewing the constitutionality of Proposition 8.
