Obama poster artist faces vandalism charges

March 10, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
There's more legal trouble for Los Angeles artist Shepard Fairey, creator of the popular "Hope" poster of President Barack Obama.Fairey's attorney, Jeffrey Wiesner, claims Fairey wasn't in Boston at the time of the alleged crimes. In a written statement, Fairey said his art is widely available on the Internet, and he wasn't involved in the illegal postings.

The 38-year-old artist was arrested last month in Boston on separate graffiti charges dating back almost nine years.

Fairey is also involved in a legal dispute with the Associated Press. The company claims Fairey's famed poster was based on an Associated Press photograph. The AP has accused Fairey of copyright infringement, and has filed a lawsuit demanding compensation.
