Gray whale wanders into San Diego Bay

March 11, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
A gray whale is in the San Diego Bay after apparently straying from a Pacific migration from Alaska to Baja California. The Harbor Patrol is trying to shepherd the 30-foot mammal back to the open ocean. There is no indication the whale is injured.

Boaters spotted the whale Tuesday and helped wave ship traffic away from the area.

Migration season technically ended in February, but animal experts say gray whales do stray occasionally.

Gray whales feed during the summer in Alaska and go to Baja to deliver their calves in the winter.
