When sheriff's deputies arrived at the house they found Vargas laying in the front yard with several stab wounds to his upper body. He was transported to Loma Linda Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
"Anthony was a great guy," said Steven Sumlar, a friend of the victim. "He just came back from Iraq. And it's sad to hear that he died."
Vargas' death comes just days before he was set to be deployed to Afghanistan for his second tour of duty.
Investigators say the suspects left the scene in two vehicles. One is described as a black Toyota Sequoia or similar SUV with tinted windows and a white sticker on the lower left corner of the rear window. The second vehicle is described as a silver Acura Integra with a smashed windshield, broken side window and a missing side mirror.
Anyone with information is urged to call the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department at (909) 387-8313.
