Machete-wielding man killed by deputies

ROSEMEAD, Calif. Police said the father of Ernesto Castaneda called saying his son was under the influence of drugs and was armed with a /*machete*/ at about 11 a.m. on the 3500 block of Temple City Boulevard.

The 22-year-old jumped the fence into his neighbor's backyard and asked them for a ride, detectives said. They said they would give him the ride if he dropped the weapons.

Then deputies arrived.

"He refused to put down the machete then started advancing at the deputies indicating that his father was going to kill him. He would not stop, would not drop at the request of the deputies, they had no choice," said Lt. Gil Carrillo from the /*L.A. County Sheriff's Department*/.

"All of a sudden I heard pop, pop, pop, four of them and that was it," said neighbor Dorothy Gabler.

Castaneda was taken to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

The officer-involved shooting is under investigation.
