Police debunk Wal-Mart threat rumor

March 19, 2009 11:33:01 AM PDT
Authorities say an e-mail and text message warning about gang initiations at Wal-Mart stores in the Inland Empire is a hoax. The message said prospective members will have to kill two to three women at a Wal-Mart in order to join an unnamed gang.

Rumors about similar messages have surfaced in Florida, Georgia and Texas recently as well. There have been no attacks on women and children shopping at Wal-Mart linked to those messages.

Nevertheless, Wal-Mart says it is stepping up security to guarantee the safety of all of its shoppers.

In a statement on Thursday, Wal-Mart said, "The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority. We are aware of the message being circulated and are working with local authorities to enhance our security efforts at our stores. While we take these types of situations seriously, we regard this as being only a rumor, much like similar rumors that have circulated via e-mail in previous years."
