SANTA ANA, Calif. --
Probation officers are recommending that former Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona be sentenced to more than six years in prison for witness tampering.Carona's probation report is sealed, but the sentencing recommendation was revealed in a motion filed by prosecutors fighting efforts by defense attorneys to have Carona's conviction thrown out. The document was filed in federal court in Santa Ana.
In January, Carona was acquitted of five felony charges, including conspiracy and mail fraud, but found guilty on one felony count of witness tampering.
Prosecutors have dropped charges against Carona's wife and former mistress.
