Will stimulus offset Calif. budget cuts?

SACRAMENTO The Stop the Cuts Coalition urged officials on Wednesday to declare that there are enough stimulus funds to avoid nearly a $1 billion in further cuts in vital programs.

"Let's not hurt our communities any more. There are other ways to fix holes in the budget besides going after the same low income people over and over again," said coalition member Nancy Berlin.

At a recent public hearing, State Treasurer Bill Lockyear said there does not appear to be enough federal stimulus money to avoid those cuts.

Lockyear and the state director of finance will be announcing their decision by April 1.
