Group recommends Ventura sales-tax hike

March 26, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Voters in the city of Ventura may be asked to approve a half-percent increase in the sales tax in November. That recommendation comes from a citizen blue ribbon budget committee appointed by the city council. The council must now give its approval to the ballot measure. The increase would last for four years.

The blue ribbon committee recommended that the extra revenue be used for public safety, infrastructure, libraries, economic revitalization, and reserves.

The city council is also considering a redesign of the budget that would reduce spending by $11.4 million during the next two years.
