Thousand celebrate Cesar Chavez birthday

March 29, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Thousands of people came out to Mission Hills Sunday for a huge celebration marking the birthday of labor rights leader César Chavez. Community organizations were in attendance, along with students and labor rights activist Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers.

The crowd gathered at Brad Park in a festive atmosphere with live music and inspirational speeches from community leaders, including City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo. Afterward people set off on the "March for Justice" all the way to Ritchie Valens Park in Pacoima.

Cesar Chavez's actual birthday is on Tuesday, along with the official state holiday.

However, on Monday city offices will be closed including libraries. State offices will be closed on Tuesday including the DMV and Superior Courts. Public schools will remain open; however, universities and community colleges will be closed on Tuesday.

County and U.S. offices will remain open on both days, and the U.S. Postal Service will deliver mail.
