Ventura County fined for bus emissions

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. California regulations require all businesses and public agencies to test their diesel trucks and buses annually. If diesel emissions exceed 60 percent of the fleet's 2005 emissions, the business or agency can be fined.

In this case, approximately 30 buses in the county's regional public transportation system, which runs from Santa Barbara to the San Fernando Valley, failed to meet the standards.

The county has asked the state to certify a new filter that would be used to reduce emissions. If the device is not approved, the Transportation Commission will have to replace all the regional buses.
