Man coughs up a nail after MRI

Prax Sanchez of Colorado Springs went to the hospital in March to have an /*MRI*/ scan done. That's when Sanchez realized something was wrong.

"I went to lay down on the MRI machine and I got a real bad pain below my right eye," said Sanchez. A short time later, Sanchez coughed, and found a one inch nail is his throat.

"After I left there, I coughed up and a nail came up through my throat," said Sanchez "I never had any idea that there was metal in my face."

Doctors say it appears the nail may have been in Sanchez's nasal cavity for up to 30 years and that the magnetic force of the MRI may have knocked the nail loose.

"To us he's a medical miracle. It's amazing, we've never seen anything like this," said Sanchez's doctor, Jamieson Kennedy.

Kennedy says once the nail got into his nose, it was only a matter of time before it would come out.

"Once it's in a nasal cavity like that, a little membrane forms around, and it just becomes a foreign body," said Kennedy.

What remains a mystery is how the nail became lodged in Sanchez's face.

Sanchez says he has no idea.
