Driver hits pregnant woman after spat

LOS ANGELES According to police, the women were arguing right before the hit-and-run on 102nd Street and Towne Avenue in Los Angeles at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The suspect, 27-year-old Monica Mercado of Los Angeles, allegedly drove a black Range Rover into the victim.

The victim, who was eight months pregnant, suffered broken bones, and her fetus died. She remains in the hospital in serious but stable condition.

Mercado turned herself in at the LAPD Newton station. She is reportedly the ex-girlfriend of the victim's boyfriend, who was also the baby's father.

The suspect is expected to be charged with attempted murder. She is being held on $500,000 bail.
