Discouraging health news for L.A. County

April 10, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
When it comes to overall health, Los Angeles County has plenty of room to improve, according to a new study comparing counties statewide.According to the report, L.A. County ranked among the worst in deaths caused by heart disease and diabetes. Health officials say the poor rankings are a continued sign that obesity related deaths are a major problem in L.A. County.

L.A. County also lagged in breast feeding rates. Another big problem is sexually transmitted diseases.

In violent deaths, the county has one of the worst homicide rates in the state.

On a positive note, the public health report places L.A. County among the healthiest in lung cancer and injury rates.

Among the state's 58 counties, L.A. ranked sixth for low rates of injury-related deaths, seventh in making sure mothers receive adequate prenatal care, and eighth for low rates of death from lung cancer.

The report was released by the California Department of Public Health and the Conference of Local Health Officers.
