Obama gives incentive to volunteer

The bill triples the size of AmeriCorps, the public service program started by President Bill Clinton, and it also ties volunteer work to money for college.

Congress passed the bill with bipartisan support last month, but some Republicans complain it's too costly and unnecessary.

How to get involved in your neighborhood:

  • http://www.volunteer.gov/ is a Web site run by the federal government, giving Americans a way to search for service opportunities within a zip code or state.
  • Ask religious leaders or faith-based organizations about ways to help others
  • Senior Corps is a government-run program offering volunteer opportunities for people 55 years and older.
  • AARP's Web site
  • Students can ask guidance counselors, a principal or the PTA about ways to help in the community.
  • Join AmeriCorps
