Transient gunned down in Commerce alley

April 21, 2009 10:54:53 AM PDT
A transient was shot and killed in an alley in Commerce early Tuesday. The man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of family, was known for taking care of stray dogs in the area where the shooting happened near Indiana Street and Union Pacific Avenue.

Witnesses told L.A. County Sheriff's deputies they heard gunshots around 1:30 a.m. and later found the victim lying in the alley. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said they have no motive for the killing at this time.

"He hung out in this alleyway," Lt. Dan Rosenberg told a reporter. "He was well-liked, well-known by the truckers. He never created any problems. It's a senseless murder."

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call L.A. Sheriff's homicide detectives at (323) 890-5500.
