Mayor Villaraigosa pushes school safety

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. School safety was on the mind of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, as he addressed students Thursday at the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies in Tarzana.

Villaraigosa accepted an invitation from a 16-year-old student to address a forum on school safety.

The invitation was prompted by a recent incident on the campus, where a student was attacked, and fought off the suspect.

Villaraigosa says he applauds the school for stepping up police patrols on campus following the attack.

Earlier in the week, the school held assemblies, reminding students to be aware of their surroundings while walking on campus and to the bus stop.

The mayor also spoke about education budget cuts, warning students and parents to be prepared for larger class sizes as a result of the city's financial crisis.
