Suspicious packages found at State Capitol

SACRAMENTO, Calif. The packages were first reported next to the Sisters of Mercy statues near the east door of the Capitol, outside the Department of Finance offices.

Those offices were evacuated within 10 minutes.

The State Assembly was in session at the time, and was also evacuated.

Capitol police determined the first bag was harmless, and called in a bomb squad robot to place an explosive next to the second bag.

That was detonated just after noon.

Authorities then determined the bag contained no explosives.

"From the observance of the officer there was just a small piece of metal that was sticking outside the bag," said Officer Jarrod Lassila, "It was undetermined right now as to all the contents that were in the bag."

All normal operations at the Capitol resumed a short time later.
