L.A. County stiffens library fines, fees

LOS ANGELES Fines for overdue adult materials will go up five cents from 25 cents to 30 cents per day. Fines for children's materials will increase from 10 cents to 15 cents a day.

The fee for replacing lost materials will increase from $7.50 to $10 per item, and replacing a library card will go from $2.50 to $3.

The changes will go into effect in two months, and are expected to generate about $350,000 a year for the county.

The public library system is available to some 3.5 million residents in unincorporated areas and 51 of the 88 cities in the county.
