Cool Kid sets strong example for others

LOS ANGELES "Friendship. Most of the time it's lonely and they want to be a part of something. And so, the Explorers is a great program to be a part of something," says Melony.

Through Explorers, Melony has gone through tactical training and has been active in outreach programs that help low-income school children. No matter the activity, she is a strong example to others.

"She puts in about 100 hours here of workout time with the kids, doing SWAT moves, working here at the station. She's really good in school. She's a leader among all the kids," says Don Norek, Training Officer.

She interacts with adults all the time, but she has a very special connection in her work with kids.

"Helping out the children a lot, with their homework and everything," says Melony. "I like to see them happy. I like to make a difference in their life."

Even though Melony has seen some of the tougher sides of life, she has hope for a better future.

"I want everyone to get along and I don't like violence, gangs ... any of that. I don't like it. I want the world to improve," says Melony.

Melony finds many ways to make her community good for young ones and safe for everyone. She is our /*Cool Kid*/.
