Off-duty cop kills suspected robber

BELLFLOWER, Calif. Police said the off-duty officer was eating at a Norm's restaurant on the 1700 block of Lakewood Boulevard when the robbery began just after 2 a.m.

Two suspects walked into the Norm's and demanded money from the employees. One suspect was allegedly armed with a large knife.

When the officer intervened, a suspect with the knife allegedly lunged at him, forcing the officer to fire three or four shots. The suspect was declared dead at the scene.

A second suspect fled the scene. Police are currently interviewing a person of interest who may be the second suspect.

Some patrons were heading into the restaurant when they realized the place was being robbed.

One witness said he saw a worker at the counter with his hands up.

"We just assumed there was a holdup," he said.

Police said there were a lot of people inside the restaurant at the time of the officer-involved shooting.

No one else was injured during the incident.

The Norm's location in Bellflower has had a troubled past.

Four years ago, there was another officer-involved shooting when a man in his 70s confront police. Cops shot and killed the man.

The officer involved in the shooting works for the Gardena Police Department.
