5 kids hurt after O.C. preschool crash

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. The crash was reported at Childtime Learning Centers on 9000 block of Yorktown Avenue at about 7:45 a.m.

Parents were dropping their children off at the time when a red BMW, driven by a mother dropping off her own child, crashed into a classroom. The driver and her child were not injured.

The 3-year-old and a 4-year-old boy were seriously injured but were hospitalized in stable condition. Three other children, all under age 5, were transported to hospitals with minor injuries, said Huntington Beach police Lt. Russell Reinhart.

Some of the teachers escorted the children to the hospitals.

Mother Sheila Ruiz said her 2-year-old was one of 14 children inside the classroom at the time of the accident. She said she got a call to pick her son up.

"I panicked. They didn't give you any description as to what happened, so I immediately came down," said mother Sheila Ruiz.

One mother said she was grateful they were running late.

"We drive up, and he said, 'Mommy, it's my play school.' So, I'm just glad we were late today," said parent Jessica Marlatt.

Police questioned the female driver, but she is not facing any citations or charges at this time.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
