Great car gift ideas for Father's Day

June 18, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
If you really love your dad and he really loves cars, why not get him something really special for Father's Day -- an Aston Martin DBS. It's the car James Bond drives. Oh, wait, it's $260,000, plus tax.

For average budgets, however, there's no shortage of fun gifts for a car enthusiast.

California Car Cover in Chatsworth is just one place for easy shopping.

"We're a mail-order company, but yeah, we've been here in Chatsworth for 18 years," said Tony DeFrank. "So we've always had retail space to help our local customers out."

Shirts, clocks, model cars, anything to surround your pop with car culture, from $10 to several hundred dollars.

My favorite? A wireless computer mouse in the shape of a Corvette or Camaro for $50.

They also said the "Old Guys Rule" itemsare also popular -- just make sure he's OK with th e title of "old guy."

"My dad's not too bad about that," DeFrank said. "He always says, 'With age comes wisdom.' He always reminds us how smart he is."

Dad might be trying to save some money these days, and detailing his own car is a way to help out. There's all kinds of detailing products available. You could sort of load him up with things that make his ride shine.

And if you want to be a really good son or daughter, offer to help him with the chore.

Another good gift that dads can do with their kids: custom model kits called RideMakerz. A fun day could be spent putting together an ultimate model car. The kits are custom-ordered online and cost from $10 to $32. For another $25 you can add a remote control set-up. Gift cards are available too.

Or your father might want to just sit back and read about cars, from timely books to a new coffee table one that traces the history of Pontiac's famous GTO muscle car.

And there's a fun one about the cars customizer George Barris did for celebrities over the years. Obviously, tastes change.

For a year-round reading gift, magazine subscriptions are great too. Find one that might interest dad, wrap the magazine up, then let him know they'll keep coming for the next year.

With so many selections, it should be easy to get that "gearhead" dad something fun.
