FBI to investigate Inglewood PD shooting

INGLEWOOD Marcus Smith, 31, was shot and killed by officers who were sent to break up a reported fight at a birthday party on the 800 block of Asage Avenue.

The officers claim Smith threatened them with a gun. Inglewood Police Lieutenant Mike McBride says an officer was wounded in the shooting.

Inglewood Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks says Smith pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers. It is unclear whether they ordered him to drop the weapon before they opened fire.

Smith's family claims he was unarmed.

"We are confident the FBI review will validate facts already made public about the incident, including our initial findings that Mr. Smith was armed and pointed his handgun at officers, resulting in the fatal shooting," Seabrooks said.

Before Smith's shooting in May, the U.S. Justice Department launched an investigation into a series of officer-involved shootings in Inglewood that claimed the lives of three unarmed suspects.

The Inglewood Police Department has pledged to cooperate fully with investigators.
