Man fights off hungry bear

SUSSEX, N.J. Henry Rouwendal was in his driveway in Sussex, preparing for a business trip to New Hampshire last Friday.

He said before he knew it, a 300 to 400 pound black bear knocked him over.

Apparently the bear had other intentions because the animal then went for a sandwich that was in the trunk of the car. At that point, Rouwendal tried to fight off the bear.

Describing the terrifying ordeal, Rouwendal said "I kicked the bear in his snout like three or four times with my foot. And then I kicked it once in the throat."

"Then it took my sandwich and ran off", Rouwendal said.

Rouwendal did not escape unscathed. He suffered a gash to his temple, an injury later treated by his wife who's a registered nurse.

Bears in that particular Sussex neighborhood are not uncommon.

Rouwendal has a bear trap in his yard and he often baits it with bacon.
