Local teen sailor back in U.S. waters

SAN DIEGO, Calif. Zac Sunderland, 17, left Marina del Rey about 13-months ago for the 28-thousand mile trip.

He pulled into San Diego early Monday aboard his 36-foot boat, Intrepid. He cleared customs and had his engine repaired and is expected to resume his trip home Tuesday. He's set to arrive back in Marina del Rey Thursday morning.

While in San Diego Sunderland enjoyed room service and some chocolate cake.

During his more than year-long journey Sunderland encountered a boat full of pirates and severe storm damage. He also had some relaxing times including surfing while waiting for his boat to be repaired on an island in the Indian Ocean.

"I don't know what to think right now," Sunderland told the Associated Press. "It's kind of crazy with this whole yearlong endeavor drawing to a close. It'll be awesome to see my friends, have a little bit of summer left. I'm still figuring out what's going on next."

Friends, family and fans are expected to be on hand for a welcome home party.

Sunderland says he's already thinking about his next adventure.
