"We heard the ambulance coming ... I was surprised," said neighbor David Sharf.
Officials said the 74-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where she underwent surgery.
Authorities said the woman was assaulted somewhere in the neighborhood while she was out for a walk.
They are not revealing any details about the circumstances of the attack. One officer described it only as a sensitive investigation.
One woman said she spoke to the victim before she was taken to the hospital, but didn't realize she had been assaulted.
Police said there were no witnesses to the crime.
Neighbors said the woman shared the home with 2 other people.
No one has been arrested, and no suspect information has been released.
