Brush fire scorches Winchester

WINCHESTER, Calif. Firefighters say the fire, which was reported around 3:30 p.m., began along Ninth Avenue and Winchester Road in Winchester.

Firefighters say 25 acres were burning when they arrived and the fire grew to about 225 acres. Officials said they had gained control of the blaze by 9 p.m.

Mandatory evacuations were in place for about 50 homes in the area between Stowe Road and Joppe Avenue, but the order was lifted by 8 p.m.

There were no reports of serious property damage, but a trailer did go up in flames. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
