Pedestrian killed in L.A. hit-and-run

SOUTH LOS ANGELES The body was found just before 1 a.m. on Western Avenue and 78th Street by another driver. Police said the man was hit while crossing Western and thrown several feet.

The car fled the scene after the accident.

Another car was driving in the area and swerved to avoid the body in the roadway. That car was involved in a minor accident.

Local resident George Quinn said he was on scene before police arrived.

"First I heard like a big sound, like boom, and so I came out and looked, and it was a person that got hit," Quinn said.

"It was just horrific," he said.

Residents say the intersection where the pedestrian was killed is a dangerous one and people often speed along Western Avenue.

"People don't obey the speed limit. If it says 35, they're going 45 or 50. Sometimes I see guys, people passing down here doing 60 or 70," said Danfus Myles.

Local resident Crystal Davis said accidents frequently occur at the intersection.

"People go real fast. Sometimes they miss the light, so it causes accidents," she said.

The victim has not yet been identified.

There are reports that the vehicle involved is an SUV, but there is no description. Police say the vehicle possibly has front-end and windshield damage.

Police urge anyone with information to call LAPD investigators at (877) LAPD-24-7, that's (877) 527-3247.
