Mom, boyfriend arrested in child's death

PASADENA, Calif. Police say 29-year-old Maria Pelaez made a frantic 911 call Tuesday at around 6 a.m. saying that her son wasn't breathing.

When authorities arrived at the home on the 500 block of Summit Avenue in Pasadena they found 2-year-old Mauricio Renee Torres unresponsive in his crib. They tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"There is evidence again, you know, that detectives found that led them to believe that something was not quite right. So we are continuing the investigation," said Janet Pope Givens from the Pasadena Police Department. "We're trying to get some statements from the parents as well as others who may know a little bit about the household activities, and from there we'll be able to make a determination."

Family and friends have been gathering at the home. One family member described Pelaez's boyfriend, 32-year-old Gabriel Diaz, as a violent man.

A neighbor called the couple problematic.

Pelaez and Diaz have been arrested on suspicion of murder, and are being held on $1 million bail.

Authorities expect to have more information Thursday when the autopsy on the 2-year-old is complete.
