Empty UC Irvine dorms means less fees

August 21, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Cost-cutting measures at UC Irvine have resulted in an unwelcome byproduct -- hundreds of empty beds in campus dormitories. The university has reduced freshman enrollment by 500 this fall, as part of $77 million in cuts.

The school says it has 500 empty beds in on-campus housing because many students are choosing to live off-campus to save money.

According to UCI, housing fees pay for day-to-day operations on campus.
