Slain Olympian may have been targeted

OXNARD, Calif. Dave Laut, 52, was killed last week outside his Oxnard home.

According to his wife, Laut went into their backyard to investigate suspicious noises, and she heard gunshots.

Responding officers found Laut had been shot multiple times in the backyard, according to David Keith of the Oxnard Police Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesman said on Thursday that investigators do not think a prowler was responsible.

Laut was a world-ranked shot putter. He was on the U.S. Olympic team in 1984, when the games were in Los Angeles, and won a bronze medal. In 2008, he became the athletic director for Hueneme High School, a school he was very familiar with because his father was a teacher there.

A memorial service is scheduled for tomorrow, at hueneme high school.
