LOS ANGELES --
Some University of California professors are planning to stage a one-day, system-wide walkout on Sept. 24, which is also the first day of class at several UC campuses. That's because they are protesting massive state budget cuts to education, specifically forced furlough days. California is slashing the UC budget by $813 million.
"We cannot allow either the California legislature or the Office of the President to proceed as though cuts to public education do not have debilitating consequences," the professors said in a letter calling for the walkout.
The letter urges faculty at all UC campuses to walk off the job on Sept. 24 unless the university system meets three conditions including allowing professors to take furloughs on days they are supposed to teach.
