The flags on the campus beneath the Phillips Theme Tower will be on display for one week, until Sept. 18th.
In addition to a flag for each of the nearly 3,000 victims, the display includes flags from the countries represented among those who died.
The university began the annual memorial Friday morning with a prayer service at the Heroes Garden, an outdoor sanctuary overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
A Pepperdine graduate, Tom Burnett was among the Sept.11 victims. He was a passenger aboard United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
Burnett and other passengers aboard the flight have been called heroes for attempting to take control of the hijacked airliner.
