Infant killed in Long Beach hit-and-run

LONG BEACH, Calif. The accident happened at around 8:15 p.m. near the intersection of E. 10th Street and Redondo Avenue.

Long Beach police spokeswoman Jackie Bezart says a man was pulling his two small children in a red wagon across the street, when a SUV sped through the intersection and hit the wagon. The wagon, with the two children inside, was caught underneath the vehicle and dragged more than half a mile.

"I heard scraping something, like he's dragging something under his car," said witness Tim Gogue. "And we see a mom running up and down the street screaming 'Oh my God, where's my baby? Where's my little girl?'"

The infant girl was pronounced dead at the scene; her body was trapped underneath the vehicle. A boy, between the ages of 2 and 3, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The father was not injured.

Authorities say the family was in a crosswalk when the incident occurred.

The driver of the SUV, an unidentified male, was taken into custody a short time later. Bezart says authorities are investigating whether he was driving under the influence.

It is still unknown whether the male suspect surrendered on his own accord or was found by police.

Long Beach police are looking for witnesses. If you have any information, you're asked to call the Long Beach Police Department at (562) 435-6711.
