City official accused of assault resigns

LOS ANGELES L.A. Building and Safety General Manager Andrew Adelman has been on administrative leave while the crime is under investigation.

He's accused of raping an unconscious woman. She told investigators she was drinking with friends in downtown L.A. when she blacked out. She said when she woke up the next morning, she was being sexually assaulted by a man she identifies as Adelman.

He has not been arrested or charged with a crime. He has not commented on the allegations.

L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has replaced him with Raymond Chan, who has been the chief executive for the Building and Safety Department.

The mayor calls Chan a dedicated public servant who has served the city well for a quarter of a century.
