Authorities address Athens shooting

LOS ANGELES Sheriff Lee Baca is also going to convene a panel to examine such incidents and to determine whether deputies need more training in how to handle possible suspects when they resist or defy orders.

Monday night, a deputy shot and killed an unarmed man during a foot pursuit.

Investigators say the two deputies thought 36-year-old /*Darrick Collins*/ and the friend he was with matched the description of armed robbery suspects.

When deputies confronted the men, Collins took off running. One of the deputies then shot him.

It turns out Collins was not the suspect. His family members are demanding the deputy who killed him be charged with murder. Collins was the father of a 16-month-old boy and a 12-year-old girl.

His friend was questioned and released.

The deputies are on leave.
