Fire breaks out in hills above Yucaipa

Arson suspect arrested for Yucaipa fire
YUCAIPA, Calif. The Crafton Fire has burned about 200 acres since it started at around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday in the Crafton Canyon area. Wednesday night, the fire was 40 percent contained.

The fire was burning toward the Mentone side and was a potential threat to homes in the hills above Mentone. No mandatory or voluntary evacuations have been ordered.

Investigators from the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department Bomb and Arson Detail arrested a 16-year-old on suspicion of arson in the Crafton Fire in Yucaipa.

Sheriff's deputies were informed shortly after the fire began Wednesday afternoon that a white male juvenile was seen leaving the location of the fire on a bicycle. The deputies immediately located the suspect east of the fire.

The suspect was taken to the Yucaipa Police Station and was then booked for arson at the San Bernardino Juvenile Hall facility.

Day classes at Crafton Hills College have been cancelled for Thursday.

The fire began at about 4:40 p.m. near Chapman Heights Road, north of Yucaipa High School.

No injuries have been reported.

Approximately 150 firefighters were on the scene.

There are light winds and low humidity in the area.
