No money to staff new downtown L.A. jail

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES The new $74 million jail was originally supposed to open in March 2008, and now is scheduled to open next February.

The police commission has been told the new jail needs twice the staff of the existing jail because of its layout, but there is not enough money to hire those jailers.

There are no plans to take officers off the street to meet that staffing need.
