Kayakers rescued off SoCal coast

SAN PEDRO, Calif. The two kayakers, whose names were not released, were trying to kayak from Catalina Island to Redondo Beach despite small craft advisories and near gale-force winds in the channel between Catalina and San Pedro.

When they failed to arrive as expected by 8 p.m. Sunday, a Coast Guard chopper and cutter began the search. The bright full moon helped.

The kayaks were spotted in choppy water and six-foot swells, four miles off Point Fermin.

The kayakers were pulled aboard the rescue ship and were said to be okay.
