UC Riverside cutting enrollment in 2010

RIVERSIDE, Calif. University officials confirmed on Tuesday that they plan to cut the freshman class by 550 students. That's in addition to 125 spots already slashed this year.

/*UC Riverside*/ officials say the admissions number could drop even more next year because this year's retention rate is much higher than expected.

The school has already taken other measures, including increasing tuition fees and cutting employee salaries, to try to curb the effects of a massive budget shortfall.

Next month, the UC Board of Regents is expected to vote on yet more student fee increases. One fee increase would be for the spring of 2010, while the other would take effect next fall.
