Grandmother identifies abandoned child

LOS ANGELES The abandoned boy has now been positively identified as 3-year-old Xavier Nelson.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstance which led to Xavier's parent or caregiver leaving him on a bus bench in the early morning hours of October 9.

Xavier remains in the care of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

A good Samaritan found the child at a bus stop at about 12:40 a.m. Friday on the corner of Florence Avenue and South Broadway, just east of the 110 Freeway.

The witness told police that he saw the child sleeping on a bus bench next to an adult woman.

He said when the bus arrived, the woman got on, leaving the child behind, and though he screamed to her, she waved him off.

He told officers he waited for more than an hour with the child before bringing him to the Los Angeles Police Department 77th Division station in South L.A.

The boy was taken to a hospital and examined when he arrived at police station. He had no signs of trauma or abuse and was found to be healthy.

The woman who left Xavier behind is described as Hispanic, between 20 and 25 years old, 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing about 110 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black-and-red-checked poncho.

The parents or guardians of the child could face charges of child abandonment or child endangerment.
