Malibu wastewater plan has hefty price

MALIBU, Calif. That tag is $52 million to be exact, according to the city of Malibu. That's over three times what the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board had quoted in recent public meetings.

Driving the demand for the treatment plan is a proposed ban on septic tanks in central Malibu that apparently affects a larger area than originally thought.

Operating and maintaining the wastewater treatment system could cost an extra $1,000 a month for homeowners and even more for business owners in that area.

Malibu is asking that the water board put the septic tank ban on hold, saying there has to be a better alternative.

The regional board is set to discuss the matter next month.
