Shot baby remains in critical condition

LOS ANGELES The 1-year-old boy is hospitalized in critical condition, and his mother is under arrest.

The kids' grandmother says that Saturday's tragedy just doesn't make sense.

The lingering question remains: How can a mother shoot and kill one child and leave another one shot and critically wounded? Twenty-five-year-old La'Tonya Dixon is accused of such a horror. Dixon allegedly shot her 5-year-old son, Christian Dixon, to death, and critically wounded her 1-year-old.

Police say when they arrived at the scene Saturday morning at the two-story apartment complex on the 7200 block of South Gramercy Place in South L.A., La'Tonya Dixon was shouting, "I've wasted my life," from her balcony.

She was also allegedly waving a gun around, but police were able to close in and arrest her.

Monday afternoon, close friends wrote notes of support for Dixon on the garage of her apartment complex. Friends say they know Dixon was an unemployed single mother having a very tough time, but she never appeared to be a danger to herself or her children.

"I don't know, I think that maybe she got discouraged, you know. She tried to do everything that she could. My grandkids, she loved those kids with all her heart. And her kids came before anything and everybody. But she does, did, have hard times. No, not yet. La'Tonya, I love you. I'm here for you," said Mariea Beckum, Dixon's mother.

And just outside of the apartment community where this tragedy happened, a few family members and friends have gathered. And just near the driveway area, they have created a makeshift memorial consisting of candles, teddy bears and flowers.

The 1-year-old baby remains in critical condition.
