Train hits, kills Fullerton father, son

FULLERTON, Calif. The two men were hit by a 7,000-foot-long freight near Balcom and Commonwealth avenues shortly before 11:30 p.m. The county coroner identifies them as 56-year-old Virgil Lamphier and his 23-year-old son David, both of Fullerton.

The family told investigators the father and son went to the tracks once a week to watch them pass by. Why they were so close to the tracks is still not known.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokeswoman Lena Kent says the train was doing about 50 mph and would have needed a mile to stop.
