Suspects arrested after ATM heist, chase

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. A Sheriff's deputy on his way to work spotted four thieves using cables to yank out the doors of the CVS Pharmacy at 26851 Trabuco Road in Mission Viejo at about 5 a.m. Tuesday. The suspects then used the same method to pull the ATM machine from its moorings.

Additional Sheriff's and California Highway Patrol units responded as a chase ensued through the streets of several cities, including Rancho Santa Margarita and Ladera Ranch.

Authorities used a spike strip to flatten the tires of the truck on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, but the driver kept going on bare wheel rims. The chase finally ended moments later when the truck caught fire and came to a stop just north of Palomar Airport Road.

Authorities took the driver, identified as 41-year-old Tracy L. Kendall, and a passenger into custody without further incident. They also recovered the ATM.

At some point during the chase, two other suspects riding in the pickup got away on foot.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Orange County Sheriff's Department at 1-866-TIP-OCSD, that's (866) 847-6273.
