Ventura police kill suspect after standoff

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. It happened just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday outside a business along the 2800 block of Palma Drive.

Police received a call about a domestic dispute in Simi Valley Saturday night involving 34-year-old Daniel Chilson. Officers were warned the suspect could be armed with a gun and might show up at his place of business along Palma Drive, so they were directed to check the building out.

Around midnight Sunday, officers spotted that man on the roof of the business and called in additional officers. The suspect hid from officers for hours until about 4:19 a.m., when he threatened SWAT officers he would shoot if they intervened in the standoff.

Officers from the Oxnard Police Department and Ventura County Sheriff's Department also came to assist.

Finally, at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the armed suspect ran from behind the business and was confronted by officers who told him to stop.

He slowed and turned toward officers, and that's when authorities say they opened fire on him.

That suspect died at the scene.

Both a criminal investigation and an investigation into the use of force by officers are ongoing.
