LB teens arrested, let go for alleged groping

LONG BEACH, Calif. Student were shocked and disappointed about what happened on the Long Beach campus last week.

"It was bad, really bad. I was shocked. My mom found out and she was like, 'What's going on with Poly right now?'" said Kathy Cortez, a Poly student.

"That's just like disgraceful. It's shocking that it would happen here. We're all mature. It's called 'scholars and champions' for a reason," said Andre Blount, another student.

According to Long Beach police and the school district, the five freshman boys, reportedly members of the football and basketball teams, inappropriately touched two freshman girls last Tuesday during lunch.

The two girls, according to police, told authorities that the boys groped their breasts and private area.

The five were arrested on different days last week, and released to their parents. They face misdemeanor sexual battery charges.

"I thought it was outrageous because I wouldn't think something like that would happen at my school," said Loren Bledsoe, a student.

According to a district spokesperson, the five boys have been suspended for five days, and two of the five have been transferred out of Long Beach Poly and into an alternative school.

"That's very appropriate. They deserve what they got," said Blount.

District officials say they are treating this situation very seriously. It's now up to the legal system to decide what the boys will be facing next.
