A large flag and yellow ribbons were displayed on the Tynes' home in Moreno Valley. Family and friends were escorted by the Army to receive the body at March Air Force Base.
At Valley View High School, where Marcus Tynes was a member of the basketball and football teams, his coach recalled the young man's determination to be in the military.
"School was not his favorite pastime, but he finally realized that he wanted to be in the service, and that was very important to him, and he knew he had to graduate from high school to get in and he got very serious about it," recalled Tynes' former coach, Jack Fogarty.
"He was a great guy, and everybody was his friend. He had no fights with anybody on the team. He could make anybody laugh. He was one of my best buddies, and he was just a great guy," said Max Holmes, Fogarty's friend.
Tynes's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal.
Tynes will be buried at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Memorial cemetery in Riverside.
