Girl paints picture of hope for homeless kids

LOS ANGELES "That's why I chose a tree for the mural, to symbolize growth and change and have residents when they see it have that kind of remind them of that message," said Alex.

Alex put together a team of volunteers, gathered supply donations and set out to give something special to the shelter. But she found that the kids there gave some back as well.

"It was really great helping them, but in a way they kind of helped us and opened up our eyes and realized that it's easy to help these kids," said Alex.

Local artist Zofia Kostyrko mentored Alex on the project. To her, Alex was more than just another teen.

"She's a senior in high school right now and she is looking at college stuff and she still was able to pull it together, synchronize it and organize it. I was incredibly impressed," said Kostyrko.

It now appears that this enterprise is only the beginning for Alex.

"It made me want to, when I go to college next year, find another organization to work with and keep doing this. It was exciting to see the kids excited about what they are doing," said Alex.

With paint, patience and pride, a picture of hope comes to kids who need it most. And it comes from our Cool Kid, Alex Morency.
